What it costs compared with roaming

Roaming is usually the most expensive way to call Australia from abroad. Telstra, Optus and Vodafone charge $1 to $3 per minute pay as you go, or $5 to $10 per day for a day pass.

Numbers that start with 13, 1300 or 1800

These numbers are usually meant for calls inside Australia, so some can't be reached from abroad. Banks that publish a separate number for overseas callers list it on their pages, and our guides use those numbers.

Do not rely on 002call for emergencies

Internet calls can fail when power or the connection is lost, and emergency services may not know where you are. In an emergency, use your phone and the emergency number for the country you are in. In Australia that number is 000, and it works from a phone inside Australia.

When to call

Australia has three main time zones: eastern (Sydney), Queensland (Brisbane) and Western Australia (Perth). The cards below show the current time in each.

Clocks go forward on 4 October 2026 and back on 5 April 2027 in New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT. Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory do not change their clocks, so the time difference shifts for part of the year.

Call quality

A browser call needs a steady connection more than a fast one, using roughly half a megabyte to one megabyte of data per minute (an estimate).

  • Use Wi-Fi or a good mobile signal.
  • Use headphones to avoid echo.
  • Switch off a VPN if the audio is choppy or one-way.
  • Check the microphone permission if the other person can't hear you.
